O Bar

According to Fairfield County Weekly, “The O Bar Martini Lounge is equally as popular as the restaurant to which it is affixed, First, garnering top honors for martinis year after year. Like the food menu, the martinis rotate every couple months to keep the selections from getting stagnant, plus there are always new concoctions to sample, including these unique varieties: banana creme, white chocolate and “twigs and berries.” Besides the luscious potables, O Bar has a bar menu available every day until midnight, DJs every Saturday, Sunday and Monday, weekday happy hours from 4:30 to 7 p.m., and Ladies Night every Thursday. Oh, almost forgot: The big news is that a second O Bar has just opened in First’s newish sister restaurant, Savvy, in New Canaan. Vive La France!”

Winner of “Best Martini” according to the 2007 Fairfield County Weekly Best of Reader’s Poll.

    Barcelona Restaurant

Barcelona Restaurant and Wine Bar is an award-winning Spanish tapas restaurant group located throughout Connecticut from the greater New York region to West Hartford and New Haven. Barcelona was begun in 1995 by Sasa Mahr-Batuz, based on his memories of years of living in Spain and Portugal, and Andy Pforzheimer, based on his 20 years as a chef at world-famous restaurants in France, California and New York.

Barcelona is listed in Zagat’s “America’s Top Restaurants,” and regularly wins in the Appetizers and Wine categories in Connecticut Magazine’s annual “Best Of” competition. The wine list, now run by a full time Wine Director, is a Wine Spectator Award winner, and features 40 different wines by the glass and vintage rarities like Vega Sicilia and Janus.

The original Barcelona, located in South Norwalk, has grown from a tiny tapas bar seating 30 to a 140-seat restaurant with two sophisticated, beautiful dining rooms and an outdoor patio. The original 40-foot-long, hand-carved walnut bar is still there, as are the young and young-at-heart who populate South Norwalk in the evenings. SoNo Barcelona showcases the old brick and raw steel of the former factory building it inhabits. It’s a touch of SoHo in SoNo, with the food and flavors of the Ramblas.

Winner of “Best Spanish Restaurant,” “Best Wine List in a Restaurant” and “Best Club DJ” according to the 2007 Fairfield County Weekly Best of Reader’s Poll.

    SBC

According to Fairfield County Weekly, “This perennial winner of both the Best Brew Pub award and Best Beer Selection in a Bar award no doubt gets so many votes because the owners achieve what is basically the holy grail of microbrewing: consistency. Because, let’s face it: You aren’t going to come back to their porter, stout, pilsner or red ale if it didn’t taste as good as it did the first time you there.”

    Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana

According to Fairfield County Weekly, “They already knew their Fairfield fan-base was humongous–that’s partly what prompted the third-generation proprietors of Frank Pepe Pizzeria to branch out beyond New Haven with the opening of the Commerce Street location last year. But Anthony Rosselli, the eldest grandchild of the legendary pizzamaker who, in the old days, used to sell pies from a pallet he carried on the top of his head as he walked down the street, claimed to be “pleasantly surprised” at winning Best Pizzeria in this year’s poll. “We don’t figure all the awards will come to us,” he says. After all, there are always those hardcore fans who’d put down any Pepe’s pie not handmade at the original. Rosselli says they worked hard to replicate not just the pie, but also the signature experience of the mother ship–from testing the water used to make the dough to duplicating the oven down to the last brick. “It took us 80 years before we launched this store, so we were deliberate–and the family is very invested in having it go right,” he notes. “It’s really gratifying to know that it has worked.”"

Winner of “Best Pizzeria” according to the 2007 Fairfield County Weekly Best of Reader’s Poll.

    Circle Diner

According to Fairfield County Weekly, “What is it about Fairfield that makes it the ground zero of diners? Is it the vast, wide-open commercial spaces that conjure up images of truckers bellying up to the counter for a cup of jet-fuel-grade java? Or the coy snugness of New England-style suburbia that is simply incomplete without booths and coin-op mini jukeboxes? Whatever the reason, the town retains the hard-fought reputation for diner heaven it earned last year, led by Circle Diner, located, perhaps not coincidentally, just south of Fairfield University. Now, if you’ll excuse us, we’re going to get some chocolate chip pancakes and stock up on free toothpicks and breath mints. It’s the little things that make a diner part of our heritage.”

    Health in a Hurry

According to Fairfield County Weekly, “When Sue Cadwell opened her healthy fast-food emporium three years ago, she could not have known just how well the concept would catch on. But, after winning the Weekly’s top honors for healthy fast food three times running, and after hearing testimonials from her steady clients, she’s convinced she’s done the county right by setting up shop here. “Nobody’s doing organic vegetarian,” Cadwell says. “People come here from California and New York, and they’re traumatized.” Health in a Hurry operates on a three-season menu, with lots of soup and daily hot luncheon specials (a recent addition) in the colder months, and wraps and salads taking over in the spring and summer. A year-round mainstay is a Mexican lentil salad that’s earned a bunch of fans. Other faves include a spicy curried cauliflower, and sweet & sour cole slaw. Cadwell has also branched out into the catering department, providing fare for the Black Rock Art Center’s “Flicks and Food” events and Urban Green’s open houses. Cadwell also let on that she’s planning to open a second outlet in Black Rock–more of a sit-down eatery, so your good health needn’t necessarily feel hurried.”

    The Pantry

According to Fairfield County Weekly, “This is the third year in a row the Pantry has won the top honor for Best Desserts in Fairfield County. They also grabbed three second place awards–Best Butcher, Best Caterer and Best Gourmet Grocer–plus two third place awards for Best Bakery and Best Place to Eat alone. Andy Rolleri, Pantry co-owner and pastry chef, responds to the stunning heap of awards he’s won by stating, simply: “We do it the old-fashioned way, the way it used to be.” Meaning that they use only natural ingredients (ie, butter not margarine). Rolleri also credits the store’s success to his dedicated and committed staff. As for the day-to-day business, Rolleri stocks his dessert counter mostly with ready-steady faves like mini eclairs, key lime pie and coconut cake; he gives over about 20 percent of his bakery space for specials and new creations. They’ve also started serving homemade ice cream and sorbets at the dessert counter, and sell hand-packed pints of most flavors, which vary from day to day (with the exception of mainstays like vanilla). Also relatively new to the Pantry–and extremely popular–are personal-size, thin crust pizzas at lunch. Rolleri says they make four to five varieties each day, many offering wild combinations like fresh ricotta cheese and blueberry, or roasted grapes, anise seeds and brie cheese. According to Rolleri, one of the Pantry’s biggest draws is the prepared-food section, with perennial favorites such as homemade chicken pot pies fairly flying out the door. The challenge has become keeping the section stocked until the store closes. As for future happenings, Rolleri aims to perfect a way to sell individual liquid-center, molten-lava cakes in their freezer section that people can take home, heat up and serve.”
